Artist Voices: Elle Chante

Elle Chante is a musical self-expressionist based in Birmingham, UK. Using her vocals, lyrics and instrumentation she strives to encompass and share the world she lives in.

A passionate advocate for a more inclusive music industry, Elle is ambassador for both Attitude is Everything and the Featured Artist Coalition. She is also a leading member of our Next Stage Artist Development Programme.

Elle’s artistry is phenomenal. She has performed at several events and festivals, including Glastonbury 2023 and our Next Stage Showcase at Samsung Kings Cross.

Over the past year, Elle Chante has undergone cancer treatment leading to a necessary break from music performance. But throughout her cancer journey she has been working quietly on her return to the music scene, with the release of ‘Pyre’, the first single from her forthcoming EP.

Being a part of the Next Stage initiative has helped me to share my experience of disability but also learn from other people in the network what makes accessing the arts feel difficult. I’m so excited to bring those two things together in this project to create a pure expression of my disabled experience – breaking down the social barriers of what people think chronic illness and disability looks/sounds and feels like.

‘Pyre’ represents a new sound for Elle, with a darker and deeper twist to her music. “After such difficult experience, I finally decided that I needed to push myself to commit to the sound I like (despite anxiety about how niche it might be!). I can’t wait to get back out there and let my audience hear the new sound.”

To mark the release of her upcoming EP Penumbra, Elle Chante will be performing Accessible Dreamscapes at Glasshouse International Centre of Music (Newcastle) on Thursday 6th June. The evening will showcase an innovative immersive piece exploring performance from a disabled perspective. Audiences are in for a treat – they’ll be the first to experience Penumbra with the artist herself.

Elle will also be performing the piece at Southbank Centre’s Unlimited 2024, a festival celebrating the artistic vision and creativity of disabled artists. Southbank Centre (London) has been awarded Platinum status in our Live Events Access Charter, an industry standard designed to help build disability equality into all aspects of events and venues. Elle will be performing on Saturday 7th September.
