Attitude is Everything has launched a national project designed to better understand the experiences of Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent audiences, artists and professionals within the UK live music sector.
Supported through funding from the Purple Guide Grants, the survey will help build a clearer picture of the social, economic and practical barriers faced by disabled people when attending, working at, or performing within live music environments.
The State of Access Survey will gather insight directly from disabled people and those living with long-term health conditions. The evidence and lived experience data collected from the survey will enable Attitude is Everything to contribute towards a broader understanding of how access barriers affect participation in live music culture across venues, festivals and events throughout the UK.
The survey explores a range of topics, including:
- The types of live music events disabled people engaged with.
- Disabled people’s experiences of accessibility at venues and festivals.
- Additional financial considerations linked to disability and access needs.
- Health-related impacts connected to live event attendance or performance/work.
- Experiences of cancellations, planning and communication.
- How disabled people prepare for, manage and respond to access-related challenges and risks.

What is the State of Access Survey?
The State of Access survey is a national undertaking to help better understand how disabled audiences, artists and workers are affected at live music events in the UK.
Who qualifies as a respondent?
We are looking for respondents who identify as disabled and/or living with a long-term health condition. For the purposes of this research, the live music industry refers to the part of the music business focused on organising, promoting, and presenting live musical performances.
Why are we doing a survey?
Live music organisations are increasingly dealing with multiple social economic challenges, but these impacts have not yet been explored for disabled people at a national level. Without that information, it is difficult to identify the specific risks, costs, and support needs of the live music sector.
What will I be asked about?
The surveys cover topics that help us understand more about your experiences and how the live events industry can improve access to venues and festivals.
The surveys include questions about:
- The types of live music events you attend/work at
- Your experience of those events (e.g., additional financial considerations, cancellations, health-related impacts)
- How you have prepared for and/or responded to access-related challenges and risks
