How do caring responsibilities intersect with disability and the music industry?

Attitude is Everything and Parents and Carers in Performing Arts (PiPA) are working together on a new piece of research, exploring how caring responsibilities intersect with disability and working in the music industry.

We’ve launched a survey and are calling for participants.

The survey closes Monday 3rd March 2025.

Who can take the survey?

Deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent people with caring responsibilities, who work in the music industry.

If you feel you fit the criteria above, then please take the survey. We will not reject any participants.

If you have recently left the music industry, please do take the survey as we are interested as to why.

What do we mean by caring responsibilities?

People don’t always identify as having care responsibilities – but the truth is, many of us do have them. They can look like:

  • Preparing someone else’s meals for them
  • Transporting a person because they need support
  • Being a parent of a child who needs additional support
  • Being an emotional or physical support for a family member
  • Supporting a neighbour with day-to-day tasks

We don’t define care responsibilities as only having children, receiving carers allowance, or working within care. It is often hidden or invisible work.

Why should I take the survey?

Attitude is Everything and PiPA want to gain a deeper understanding of how caring responsibilities intersect with disability and working in the music industry, paving the way for actionable change.

Together, we can ensure that every voice is heard, and that the music industry reflects the richness of its contributors.

What will happen after the survey closes?

The data will be collated by Birkbeck University, and a piece of research which analyses the findings will be published mid 2025. This research will include recommendations and steps forwards that the sector can take.
