people about their experiences of accessing LGBT+ spaces, particularly venues, events and prides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>128 LGBT+ identified people with access requirements shared their experiences in the online survey. 95% identify as Deaf or disabled people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key findings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-primary-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-primary-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey found that Deaf and disabled LGBT+ people still face significant barriers attending community events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>80% have been&nbsp;<strong>put off attending<\/strong>&nbsp;a pride or an LGBT+ venue due to access concerns.<\/li><li>70% reported&nbsp;<strong>feeling unwelcome<\/strong>&nbsp;at prides or LGBT+ venues as a Deaf or disabled LGBT+ person.<\/li><li>96% would be&nbsp;<strong>more likely<\/strong>&nbsp;to attend a pride or LGBT+ venue if they provided&nbsp;<strong>comprehensive access information.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-foreground-color has-background-background-color has-text-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:50px;margin-bottom:50px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-14 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Themes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-primary-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-primary-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Both at prides and LGBT+ venues, survey respondents faced barriers due to bad attitudes, lack of awareness and limited information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dismissive or hostile&nbsp;<strong>attitudes<\/strong>, both from staff and members of the public, were a big barrier for many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI have problems with people stepping in to try and grab my wheelchair if my carer lets go even for a moment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lack of disability&nbsp;<strong>awareness&nbsp;<\/strong>from organisers, staff and volunteers was an issue for many people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cSecurity staff don\u2019t seem to have any disability awareness training, and just presume I\u2019m drunk (when I\u2019m sober).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lack of accurate, good quality, comprehensive access&nbsp;<strong>information&nbsp;<\/strong>was a central issue at all kinds of events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI&#8217;m nervous about attending a venue unless I have good access information but this is often difficult to find out.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-foreground-color has-background-background-color has-text-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:50px;margin-bottom:50px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-12 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-primary-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-primary-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Being unable to attend events due to bad access left many survey respondents feeling unwelcome, isolated, rejected, depressed and cut off from the LGBT+ community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI think I have missed out on the feeling of community that other queer people seem to have.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-foreground-color has-background-background-color has-text-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:50px;margin-bottom:50px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-10 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solutions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-primary-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-primary-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The report ends with 5 simple steps any event or venue can take to make improvements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Consult and involve disabled people in your event or venue<\/strong>. Try a local disabled people\u2019s organisation (DPO).<\/li><li><strong>Make it clear that ableist behaviour isn\u2019t tolerated.&nbsp;<\/strong>Include ableism in any safer spaces policy, and make sure ableist harassment is properly addressed.<\/li><li><strong>Provide good quality access information for every element of your event.&nbsp;<\/strong>Attitude is Everything\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.attitudeiseverything.org.uk\/accessstartsonline\">Access Starts Online<\/a>&nbsp;guides can show you what to include.<\/li><li><strong>Train yourself and your staff.&nbsp;<\/strong>Public-facing staff should all have disability equality training, and be aware of all access facilities and policies.<\/li><li><strong>Think about the audience experience.&nbsp;<\/strong>Think about access at every part of your event.
